Located at Sandouping in Xiling Gorge, the Three Gorges Sam is the largest water conservancy project ever undertaken.

The idea of Three Gorges Dam was first proposed by Dr. Sun Yat-sen in 1919, carried out in 1994, and the structure was completed in 2006, and it now fully operational. The Three Gorges Dam is 2,335 meters long, 185 meters high, 18 meters wide on the top and 130 meters wide at the bottom part.

The dam has raised the river to level of 175 meters above sea level, creating a 600 kilometers long reservoir extending from the dam site all the way to Chongqing. It has submerged approximately 570,000 acres of farmland, 13 cities, 140 towns, 1,352 villages, and 657 factories, causing approximately 1.5 million people to be relocated. The estimate for construction of the project is US$70 billion. The building of this huge dam is for the purpose of flood control, generation of electricity, navigation, and irrigation. Victoria's ships sail through its adjacent system of ship locks.

Wanzhou is a mountainous city which is an important port and industrial center. This city received its name during the Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644) and became a foreign Treaty Port in 1902. In 1926, two British gunboats bombarded the city, when the local warlord took to commandeering foreign vessels to transport his troops. Following this incident, a boycott on the loading of British vessels was enforced for several years. This became known as the "Wanxian Incident". Wanxian tangerines, oranges and peaches are renowned throughout China. The city's silk-spinning and weaving industries are well known in the Yangtze River Three Gorges region. The exciting acrobatic show is well known in this region, and there is a free market in town where local produce and crafts are sold.
