Brief Introduction of Qutang Gorge
Qutang Gorge, starting from the White Emperor City in the west and ending in the Daxi Town in Wushan County in the east, is totally 8 kilometers long. The sceneries in Qutang Gorge are famous for its precipitous and magnificent characters. Actually, it is the most precipitous and most magnificent reaches of Yangtze River.
Attractions of Qutang Gorge
Qutang Gorge is well known for its magnificence. At its entry in the west, the cliffs erect along the two banks, with a height of several hundred zhang (a Chinese length unit, 1 zhang=3.33 meters) and a width of less than 100 meters, just like a gate. It is called Kuimen. The "gate" on the left is called Chijia Mountain, and the "gate" on the right is called Baiyan (white salt) Mountain, for that there is always a silvery radiance on it whatever the weather is.
With high mountain and narrow gorges, you can enjoy the view of Yixiantian (a line of sky) when you stand at the bottom of the valley, looking up to the sky. Water in Qutang Gorge is quite deep and the flows are quite rapid. The narrowest range of the river is less than 50 centimeters with turbulent water roaring forward. It is really heart-stopping and thrilling.
Qutang Gorge area is also abundant in cultural relics, which are always praised by the visitors. In the upper reaches of the gorge, there are the Fengjie Ancient Town, Eight Dispositions and Yufu Towe. On the north bank of the gorge, there is the White Emperor City with lots of precious cultural relics, breathtaking ancient plank roads as well as the mysterious Fengxiang Gorge. On the south bank of Qutang Gorge, there is Water-washed Wall full of precipice inscriptions, which is a perfect resort for poets.
