Gezhouba Project is located on the Yangtze River, 2.3 kilometers away from the Nanjin Pass – exit of the Yangtze River Three Gorges, and 38 kilometers away from the Three Gorges Dam in the upstream. The Gezhouba Dam not only has power generation, navigation and other comprehensive benefits, its main task is to counter adjust the Three Gorges Hydropower station, to solve the adverse effect of the unstable water flow in Three Gorges Hydropower Station on the downstream river course and Yichang Port. At the same time, it lifted the water level, submerged the dangerous shoals in the river course between Three Gorges Dam and Nanjin Pass, decreased the water flow rate in this river course, improved the flow regime in this part, and widened the navigation passage. So the navigation condition in this gorge part is greatly improved.

Before the Three Gorges Project completed, The Gezhouba Dam used the fall of river course in Three Gorges to generate electricity. At the same time, it also improved the navigation condition about 100 kilometers in the upstream.

The Gezhouba dam is 70 meters high, normal storage water level is 66 meters, the volume of the reservoir is 1580 millions cubic meters, the installed power generation capacity is 27150 million KW, and annual generating capacity is 15.7 billion KWH; while the Three Gorges Dam is 185 meters high, the normal storage water level is 175 meters, the total volume of the reservoir is 39.3 billion cubic meters, the installed power generation capacity is 1. 820 million KWH, and annual generating capacity is 8.47 billion KWH.
